Giglio Porto

Giglio Porto is a district of the municipality of Isola del Giglio on the island of Giglio in the province of Grosseto , Tuscany region in Italy .

geography

The place is 47.7 km southwest of the provincial capital Grosseto and 160 km southwest of the regional capital Florence on the eastern edge of the island. The place is 9  meters above sea level and has about 610 inhabitants. It is the largest place on the island.

history

The place was already an important port in Roman times , which was equipped with a long pier . Parts of this ancient pier were used in 1796 when the architect Alessandro Nini built the current and shorter pier. The cruise ship Costa Concordia had an accident in front of the port on January 13, 2012 .

  • Chiesa dei Santi Lorenzo e Mamiliano , church in the center of Giglio Porto, designed by the engineer Ernesto Ganelli (1958).
  • Torre del Lazzaretto , watchtower built after 1561 outside of Giglio Porto. It is named after the adjoining hospital that was built in 1622 .
  • Torre del Porto , also called Bagno del Saraceno or Torre del Saraceno , watchtower with an unknown date of construction, which was first mentioned in writing in 1554 in a document by Giovan Battista Ariani.
  • Villa Marittima , former building and today's ruin. Originated in the 1st century BC And was built by Domizi Enobarbi from the Domitius family .
