Giglio Castello

Giglio Castello is a fraction and capital of the municipality of Isola del Giglio on the island of Giglio in the province of Grosseto in the Tuscany region and is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy).

geography

The place is 47.5 km southwest of the provincial capital Grosseto and 160 km southwest of the regional capital Florence . The place is 405  meters above sea level and has about 554 inhabitants.

history

The place probably originated in the 10th century and is first mentioned in documents of the Roman monastery Tre Fontane in 1269. From 1216 the Aldobrandeschi from Santa Fiora ruled the place , who administered the place for the respective rulers from Florence or Pisa (until 1362). After the male Medici line died out in 1737, the place with the entire island and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany fell to the ruling house of Habsburg-Lorraine . After the escape of Ferdinand III. on March 27, 1799, the troops of Napoleon Bonaparte gained control of the place, after their defeat the place fell back to the Habsburg-Lothringers.

  • Chiesa di San Pietro Apostolo , church in the center, which was first mentioned in 1408. It was restored and expanded in 1722 by Giovanni Domenico Fei, and further expansion took place in 1755. Another restoration was carried out in 1841 after the vault collapsed .
  • Rocca aldobrandesca , also called Rocca pisana , originated in the 12th century by the Pisans and then expanded by the Aldobrandeschi. These were replaced by Siena in 1339 , who in turn remained rulers of the place for 6 years. The castle was restored from 1595 to 1623 by the architect Alessandro Pieroni on behalf of Ferdinando I de 'Medici .
  • City wall , fortification of the Borgo (lower town) from the 12th century, which is equipped with three city gates and ten watchtowers (7 rectangular and 3 semicircular).
