Life

The artist's place and year of birth are unknown. Gaudenz Freuler calculates the year of birth back to around 1325. He was active as a painter in the Siena area from 1350 to 1384. He probably learned his work from Pietro Lorenzetti , but influences from Lippo Vanni can also be found. Luca di Tommè and Niccolò di ser Sozzo , the trainer of Tommè and friend of the brothers Ambrogio and Pietro Lorenzetti , also had an influence on his work . He was often confused with Bartolo di Fredi . From 1368 at the latest he also held public offices in Siena, first as priore (head) of the third city of Terzo di Camollia , then as prison director and councilor (Consiglio generale di Siena). He also had close contacts and business relationships with the goldsmiths' guild .
