The basilica is located within the city walls of Siena in Piazza Manzoni . This is located in the third third of the city Terzo di San Martino in the Contrada Valdimontone (Aries). The church also includes the convent , which was headed by the Servites , and the Oratorio della Santissima Trinità from 1380 .

History and structure

The basilica emerged from the Chiesa di San Clemente , which was built around 1234 by the Order of the Servites. Brick deliveries from the city of Siena (approx. 50,000) are documented from 1362 to support the expansion of the church. The seams on the facade show that the building was later widened and raised. From 1473 to 1528 the transept was vaulted and the basilica nave was built in its current form with its Ionic columns and the barrel-vaulted chapel niches accompanying the side aisles in the style of the Renaissance. In contrast to the two older, large mendicant churches in Siena, which today also have the ecclesiastical rank of a basilica minor , the designation "basilica" in S. Maria dei Servi can certainly be related to the building type .

The consecration of the church took place on May 18, 1533, but it was not completed until 1537. The church facade remained unfinished. From 1890 to 1901 the church was restored by Giuseppe Partini and Agenore Socini. In 1908 it was elevated to a minor basilica . The campanile dates from the 13th or 14th century and was completely restored in 1926. The basilica belongs to the Archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa-Montalcino . The relics of Francesco Patrizi da Siena (1266–1328) and Gioacchino da Siena (around 1258–1305) are in the church.
