Ugolino di Nerio

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ugolino di Nerio (also called Ugolino da Siena , * approx. 1280 , probably in Siena ; † approx. 1349 ) was an Italian painter who painted in the style of the Siena School .

Life

He probably learned his craft with Segna di Bonaventura from Duccio di Buoninsegna , who died in Siena in 1319. Di Nerio himself is considered to be active as a painter from 1315 to 1327, although he was already an independent master in 1315. The first (still existing) written mention of his person comes from the year 1317. For a long time he was equated with a Ugolino di Nerio mentioned around 1324/1325 , until the Italian art historian Gaetano Milanesi (born September 9, 1813 in Siena; † 11. March 1895 ibid) clarified the origin. This is later confirmed by his pupil P. Bacci and additionally documented by two further documents from the years 1324/1325 and 1327. Here he is mentioned as the son of Nerio or Rainerio, who apparently was a painter himself and also taught his son Ugolino and had two other sons, Guido and Muccio or Monuccio. The first is listed in Florentine documents in 1327 as a pharmacist and doctor, the second appears in Senese documents 1319, 1333 and 1342 (as deceased).

One of his first works as an independent artist was created in Florence in the Palazzo Pitti in 1315 under the name Madonna Contini Bonaccossi . His main works included the pictures in the churches of Santa Croce and Santa Maria Novella in Florence. The altarpiece of Santa Croce is his only signed work, which he signed with UGOLINUS DE SENIS ME PINXIT around 1325 . The original signature was lost in 1566 when Giorgio Vasari replaced the work with his own, but he recorded the dedication. Due to the redesign, parts of the work were lost, others can now be found in various art collections around the world. These include the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin , which owns the parts of San Paolo , San Giovanni Battista , San Pietro , San Simone e san Giuda Taddeo e San Bartolomeo e sant'Andrea , Deposizione di Cristo nel sepolcro and Flagellazione . The National Gallery in London owns eleven pieces of the work, including Bacio di Giuda , David e Mosè , Deposizione dalla croce , Profeta Isaia , Resurrezione di Cristo and Salita al Calvario . The predella of the work represents the Passion of Christ. Further parts are in the Philadelphia Museum of Art in Philadelphia ( Profeta Daniele ) and in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art ( Ultima Cena ). Parts of his work in the Church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence are now in the Muzeum Narodowe in Posen ( San Giovanni Battista ) and in the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles ( Sant'Andrea ).
