San Casciano in Val di Pesa is an Italian municipality with 16,878 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in Tuscany .
geography
The municipality is located 15 kilometers south of Florence and 45 kilometers north of Siena on a hill between the valleys of the Pesa and Greve in the north-western Chianti region .
The districts include Bardella, Bargino, Calcinaia, Campoli, Cerbaia, Chiesanuova, Cigliano, Faltignano, La Romola, Mercatale in Val di Pesa , Montefiridolfi, San Pancrazio, Sant'Andrea in Percussina and Spedaletto.
The neighboring communities are Barberino Tavarnelle , Greve in Chianti , Impruneta , Montespertoli and Scandicci .
history
The place originated as a settlement of the Etruscans . The place gained importance from the 11th century as a station on the route between Florence and Siena. In the 13th century the place fell under the control of Florence. After attacks, sieges and seizures of the place by Heinrich VII. (1312) and Castruccio Castracani (1326) Florence expanded the place into a fortress in 1355. In 1513 Niccolò Machiavelli found refuge in the Albergaccio family estate (also known as Casa Machiavelli ) in the district of Sant'Andrea in Percussina after his exile from Florence. This is where his work “ The Prince ” was created.
In 1880 Sidney Sonnino began his ascent as an MP in San Casciano. The place received more attention in the early 1980s, when several defendants in the murder trial of the Monster of Florence came from the district of Mercatale.
