history

The place itself dates from the Etruscan era , probably in the 7th century BC. Settled for the first time. The castle Castello di Gambassi was documented for the first time on January 9, 1037 as the property of Guido del fu Ranieri and encompassed today's historic town center. Until 1113 the place belonged to Count Conte Ugo del fu Uguccione de 'Cadolingi. In the 12th century Gambassi Volterra was annexed and at the beginning of the 13th century the place San Gimignano was assigned, but in 1294 it fell to the Republic of Florence. In 1322 Gambassi was allowed by Florence to raise his own statutes.

Until 1917 the municipality was part of Montaione . Then it became an independent municipality together with Castagno, Catignano and Varna. This separation was preceded by a dispute over the budget and reallocations lasting about twenty years.

economy

  • Gambassi Terme has been known for glass production since the Middle Ages up to the present day . Glass production was first mentioned in writing in 1276, when eight manufacturing companies were listed in the documents.
  • The thermal springs of Acqua Salsa di Pillo have been used since the 14th century and have since been converted into a modern thermal bath . In the municipality, parts of thermal facilities were also found that go back to the Etruscan and Roman times and are now exhibited in the town hall.
