Vetralla is a town in the province of Viterbo in the Italian region of Lazio with 13,930 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is 68 km north-west of Rome and 16 km south of Viterbo .

Vetralla is located near Lake Vico in the volcanic hill country of southern Tuscia with its deeply cut valleys. It is a member of the Comunità Montana dei Cimini .

The districts Cinelli, Cura, Giardino, La Botte, Mazzocchio, Pietrara and Tre Croci belong to Vetralla.

The neighboring communities are Barbarano Romano , Blera , Capranica , Caprarola , Monte Romano , Ronciglione , Villa San Giovanni in Tuscia and Viterbo .

Vetralla is on the SS 2 Via Cassia , which runs from Rome via Viterbo to Florence . In Vetralla the SS 1 bis branches off, which connects the place with the Via Aurelia near Tarquinia . history

At the end of the Roman era, the population moved from the town of Forum Cassii, about two kilometers from the present location, to the current dominant and easily defended location. With the Sutric donation , Vetralla belonged to the Papal States , from 1110 to 1134 to the Lords of Viterbo . 1145 called Pope Eugene III. in Vetralla, where he wanted to escape the Roman acts of violence and fighting, with the bull Quantum praedecessores for the 2nd crusade . After Vetralla was disputed for a long time between the Papal States and the Lords of Viterbo, it came under the rule of several noble families connected to the Pope, such as the Orsini and the Di Vico .
