Location of Valentano in the province of Viterbo

Valentano is located 117 km north of Rome , 116 km south of Siena and 33 km northwest of Viterbo . The municipality is located on the northwestern edge of the Lazio region on the border with Tuscany .

The historic town center is located on a hill of the Volsiner Mountains which surround Lake Bolsena , from whose west bank the town is 6 km away. The modern suburbs of Felceti and Villa Fontane are on the plain between the hills and the lake.

Valentano is a member of the Comunità montana Alta Tuscia Laziale .

The neighboring municipalities are Latera , Gradoli , Capodimonte , Piansano , Cellere , Ischia di Castro , Farnese and Pitigliano ( GR ) in a clockwise direction .

geology

Valentano is located in a formerly volcanically active area, the so-called Apparato Vulsinio . The city itself lies on the caldera of one of the four main volcanoes, the Latera crater. The nearby Lake Bolsena itself was created by the collapse of underground magma chambers. Numerous thermal springs in the area still remind of the volcanic past .

The community is located in earthquake zone 3 (little risk).
