San Lorenzo Nuovo is an Italian commune in the province of Viterbo in the Lazio region with 2072 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located 120 kilometers northwest of Rome .

San Lorenzo Nuovo is located in the Monti Volsini between Lake Bolsena and the border with Tuscany .

history

San Lorenzo alle Grotte, the predecessor village, used to be halfway between Lake Bolsena and the range of hills surrounding it, the edge of the caldera . According to tradition, Pope Hadrian V is said to have founded the village in 1157.

In the middle of the 18th century, a malaria epidemic occurred in old San Lorenzo , which less than 400 people survived. It was then decided to relocate the village on a hill about four kilometers from the old town. It was assumed that the disease was caused by stifling air and since there is usually a fresh north wind blowing high above the lake, the place was rebuilt there. In another statement, the air is said to have become unhealthy because of some ponds where hemp was processed. Furthermore, the erosion of the tuff layer on which the buildings were erected is said to have endangered their stability.

The Roman architect Francesco Navone was commissioned, who geometrically laid out the new place San Lorenzo Nuovo ( Nuovo : the new ). He designed it with a central octagonal square with the new parish church and houses with two different apartment patterns. The foundation stone was laid in 1774 and resettlement began in 1778. The buildings of the old town were torn down and burned down, the return of the population should be prevented. Therefore there are hardly any traces of old San Lorenzo left.

Maria Gabriela Grassini ( center-right alliance ) was elected mayor in June 2004. Their center-right alliance provided the majority in the local council with 8 out of 12 seats. Massimo Bambini has been the new mayor since May 26, 2014.

Culinary specialties

In mid-August, the Sagra degli Gnocchi San Lorenzo Nuovo ( Potato Noodle Festival ) takes place annually, which attracts numerous visitors.
