Bar-sur-Aube is a French commune with 4902 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) and the capital of the eponymous arrondissement of Bar-sur-Aube in the Aube department (named after the river Aube ) in the Grand Est region . The inhabitants are called Baralbins . Paris is 207 kilometers away, Troyes 52 kilometers.
history
Ancient to early modern times
The place has been populated at least since the younger Iron Age ( La Tène culture ). In the municipality a coining was found that the name of the Lingones chief carries Togirix. In late antiquity, Bar was ravaged by the Huns and belonged to Austrasia after the division of the Franks . Coins with the name of the place have survived from the reign of Charles the Bald . Under the Counts of Champagne , Bar was an important trading center due to its role as the location of an important champagne fair in the High and Late Middle Ages , which was ended by a plague epidemic in 1636 .
19th century
During the revolution, Bar was the main town in the district from 1790 to 1800.
In 1814 the later first German Emperor Wilhelm I of Prussia accompanied his father as captain in the persecution of Napoleon and acquired the Iron Cross in recognition of the Battle of Bar-sur-Aube .
In 1862 the city's fortifications were razed .
During the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, the armies, initially under the commanders-in-chief Helmuth Karl Bernhard Graf von Moltke and François-Achille Bazaine , fought each other near Bar-sur-Aube with numerous deaths on both sides.
20th century
During the First World War , General Joseph Joffre took his headquarters from September 1 to 4, 1914 in the École Communale de Garçons in Bar-sur-Aube . From the first day of the Battle of the Marne , his headquarters were in Châtillon-sur-Seine .
