Bayel is a French commune with 758 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Aube department in the Grand Est region . The place belongs to the arrondissement Bar-sur-Aube and the canton Bar-sur-Aube . In addition, the community is part of the 1994 founded association of municipalities Région de Bar-sur-Aube . The inhabitants are called Bayellois (es) . They are nicknamed Les boeufs . Because of its crystal factory, the municipality is also called Cité du cristal (City of Crystals).
geography
Bayel is located on the western bank of the Aube around 53 kilometers east-southeast of Troyes and 6 kilometers southeast of the small town of Bar-sur-Aube in the east of the Aube department on the border with the Haute-Marne department . The community consists of the village of Bayel and several farms and is largely covered by forest.
Neighboring communities are Lignol-le-Château in the north and northeast, Rennepont (in the Haute-Marne department) in the east, Longchamp-sur-Aujon in the south, Ville-sous-la-Ferté in the southwest, Baroville in the west, and Fontaine and Bar-sur -Aube in the northwest.
history
The first traces of settlement date from the Iron Age. The place is first mentioned by name in 1101 as a Bavarian . In 1678, the Manufacture Royale en Cristaux de Bayel crystal factory (now Cristallerie Royale de Champagne) started operations. Until the French Revolution, Bayel was within the province of Champagne . The community belonged to the district of Bar-sur-Aube from 1793 to 1801. It has been part of the Bar-sur-Aube arrondissement since 1801. From 1793 to 1801 the place was assigned to the canton Longchamp-sur-Aujon. The municipality has been within the canton of Bar-sur-Aube since 1801 .
