National Day Concert
The national holiday concert is an Austrian festival that takes place every year on the evening before the national holiday (October 26th). The Wiener Symphoniker play in the Wiener Konzerthaus , conducted every year by a guest conductor from another country.
The concert is traditionally under the patronage of the Federal President of the Republic of Austria , who usually takes part personally.
Official festive event
The Wiener Symphoniker are one of the four world-class Austrian orchestras. It is mostly a concert orchestra, but also plays operas at the Bregenz Festival and in the Theater an der Wien . In addition to the Vienna Philharmonic, the orchestra is regularly used for representative purposes of the Republic of Austria, for example for the annual Festival of Joy on Vienna's Heldenplatz, and also represents the nation on tours around the world.
The concert is traditionally played with the Austrian national anthem based on a text by Paula Preradović , to which the audience rises. Every year the concert is led by a different conductor, for example from Australia, France, Great Britain, Italy, Russia or the Czech Republic. Program items are often with large orchestral works of the 3 major B ( Beethoven , Brahms and Bruckner ), all of which are viewed as great composers in Austria, although Beethoven came from Bonn and Brahms from Hamburg. Like conductors, singers and instrumentalists, the program items are not selected according to national or nationalistic aspects.
Until 2014, the gala concert took place every year in the Great Hall of the Vienna Musikverein , now in the Wiener Konzerthaus . The gala concert has been repeated once since 2013, mostly on the day after the national holiday.
In the absence of a Federal President, protection of honor was waived in 2016 .
