Hermann von Gilm zu Rosenegg , actually: Hermann Gilm von Rosenegg (born November 1, 1812 in Innsbruck , †  May 31, 1864 in Linz ) was an Austrian lawyer and poet . His brother Hugo von Gilm (1831–1906) became a chemist.

Life

Of Swabian-Alemannic descent, he spent his youth in Vorarlberg , where he attended high school in Feldkirch . After studying law at the University of Innsbruck , he was a civil servant in Schwaz , Bruneck and Rovereto from 1840 . In 1846 he came to Vienna and initially worked as a concept intern in the court chancellery , after which it was dissolved in the k. k. Home Office . In 1856 he was appointed head of the presidential office of the Lieutenancy in Linz . In his responsibility for the theater department, he wrote theater reports and prevented gross interventions in the schedules and texts of the plays.

Hermann von Gilm earned praise for his subtle poems. His heated disposition is reflected in the political songs, and as an opponent of the Jesuits , he wrote sharp polemics . In dealing with his works he was cautious towards the public. As a liberal , the official could not publish his political and ecclesiastical convictions under his name. Only the book of poems Tiroler Schützenleben appeared during his lifetime .

Gottfried Benn valued the poet. In 1885 Richard Strauss set eight poems from the cycle “The Last Leaves” (originally published in Sophienlieder ) to music as his Opus 10, among them “Zueignung” (No. 1), “Die Nacht” (No. 3) and “ Allerseelen ”(No. 8) enjoys lasting popularity.

Honors

In 1873 this project was implemented; The elementary school located there was also called Gilmschule . There is also a bust of Gilm on the facade of the Tyrolean State Museum in Innsbruck.

A street in Bozen is also named after Hermann von Gilm, as has (since 1910) in Dornbirn , where Gilm grew up.

In 1894 the Gilmgasse in Vienna- Hernals was named after him, and in 1898 a bust was unveiled in his honor at the house where he died in Linz .
