Ernst Heinrich Kneschke

Ernst Heinrich Kneschke (born August 27, 1798 in Zittau , † December 2, 1869 in Leipzig ) was a German heraldist , ophthalmologist and writer .

Life

Ernst Heinrich Kneschke was the second son of the vice-principal at the Zittau grammar school and librarian of the council library, Johann Gottfried Kneschke (1766-1825), and his wife Juliana Therese, née Kühn († 1802). On May 10, 1817, Kneschke enrolled in Leipzig . After completing his studies, he acquired the medical baccalaureate on September 24, 1828 and the Licenciat (qualification to teach) on October 29, 1828. His Leipzig medical doctorate in 1828 was De hydrothorace . In 1829 he qualified as a professor and held lectures until his death in December 1869; In 1843 he was appointed associate professor of ophthalmology.

Kneschke worked part-time with history and genealogy and was best known for the nine-volume New General German Adels Lexicon (Leipzig 1859–1870), which he published, is an important genealogical aid and has seen several reprints. On the occasion of his death, the Leipzig University honored him as "once a highly esteemed ophthalmologist who later turned to encylopedic and literary work".

Kneschke was actively involved in the establishment and work of the Society for the History of Leipzig .

In the manuscript department of the Leipzig University Library there are letters by Kneschke in various bequests.

Kneschke was married since January 5, 1829 in Dresden with Augusta Charlotta Kneschke (born August 11, 1801 - † July 10, 1856) a daughter of Christian August Pescheck (born December 29, 1760 in Zittau , † September 29, 1833 in Dresden ) , married in 2nd marriage since May 27th, 1793 with Christiane Caroline Pescheck born. Kleych.

The marriage resulted in three children: Thekla Therese Kneschke (born December 25, 1830), Theodor Gustav Kneschke (born July 10, 1832), law student, 1866 police commissioner in Leipzig, and Dr. phil. Julius Emil Kneschke (born November 4, 1835).
