New general German nobility lexicon
New general German nobility lexicon is the title of a historical reference work by Ernst Heinrich Kneschke on the German nobility . The work was published in nine volumes from 1859 to 1870 by Friedrich Voigt in Leipzig. The first subscriber was King John of Saxony .
According to the foreword of the first volume, the purpose of the publication was to “view, supplement and compile” the material on the families of the nobility, “namely for quick and easy use, initially in the interests of the nobility and its history, as well as history in general the so important statistics, genealogy and heraldry etc. "
The families are listed according to the alphabet of the family name. Mostly the nobility, the origin of the family, ancestral seat, sometimes family coat of arms, basic features of the family history and prominent relatives are mentioned. The bibliographical information with additional works on almost all families is valuable for today's use.
The New General Adels Lexicon was continued until 1942 by the Gothaischen Genealogical Pocket Books of the Noble Houses .
