David Zinman

David Joel Zinman (born July 10, 1936 in New York ) is an American conductor .

Life

Zinman received his first violin lessons at the age of six. He attended the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts on the Upper West Side in Manhattan and studied violin at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio, and theory and composition at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He took conducting studies at the Tanglewood Music Center of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in Lenox, Massachusetts. In Maine he worked with Pierre Monteux from 1958 to 1962 and was his assistant with the London Symphony Orchestra from 1961 to 1964 . He had his big breakthrough at the Holland Festival in 1963.

Zinman was from 1964 to 1977 (alongside Szymon Goldberg ) conductor of the Nederlands Kamerorkest in Amsterdam, then music director of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in Rochester, New York from 1974 to 1985 and finally chief conductor of the Dutch Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra from 1979 to 1982 Years guest conductor, he was music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) in Baltimore, Maryland from 1985 to 1998 . Together with this orchestra he recorded numerous important music productions, including the Schumann symphonies and American classical music. Under his leadership, the BSO advanced to become one of the most important ensembles in the USA. He brought u. a. Works by John Adams , William Bolcom , Richard Danielpour , Michael Daugherty , Aaron Jay Kernis , Leon Kirchner , Christopher Rouse and Michael Torke premiered. His recording of Henryk Mikołaj Górecki's 3rd Symphony with the London Sinfonietta became an international bestseller.

Since 1995 he has been chief conductor of the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra . There he had great successes ( Beethoven symphonies , music by Robert Schumann and Richard Strauss ) in his concerts and was also celebrated thanks to his CD recordings. In autumn 2009, Zinman and the Tonhalle Orchestra together with the composers Diego Baldenweg with Nora Baldenweg & Lionel Vincent Baldenweg recorded an elaborate soundtrack for the film 180 ° , which won the SUISA prize for the "best film music 2010" at the Locarno International Film Festival. was honored. Since 2010 he has been leading international conducting courses with the orchestra. In 2014 he said goodbye in Zurich.

From 1998 to 2009 he was Artistic Director of the Aspen Music Festival and School in Aspen, Colorado, and Program Director of the American Academy of Conducting . Zinman has repeatedly conducted the renowned American orchestras in Boston, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Minnesota, Philadelphia, Chicago, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and New York; in Europe he is a guest with the Berlin Philharmonic , the Orchester de Paris , the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, the London Philharmonia Orchestra , the Munich Philharmonic , the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra as well as the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra .
