Erich Schmid (born January 1, 1907 in Balsthal , Canton Solothurn, † December 17, 2000 in Zurich ) was a Swiss conductor and composer .

Life

Schmid grew up as the son of the Protestant pastor of Balsthal and attended the teachers' college in Solothurn from 1922 to 1926. There he received lessons from Max Kaempfert . After a brief activity as a primary school teacher, Schmid attended the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt a. M. (studied with Bernhard Sekles , Fritz Malata and Hermann Ritter von Schmeidel (1894–1953)). From 1928 to 1932 he received a scholarship from the Mozart Foundation (Frankfurt), and his first works were broadcast on the radio. Spurred on by these successes, he decided to attend Arnold Schönberg's master class in Berlin from 1931 to 1933 . After returning to Switzerland for political and financial reasons, he took over the position of music director in Glarus in 1934, succeeding Jacob Gehring , which he held until 1949. From 1940 his compositional work stepped back in favor of conducting, in 1949 he was able to take over the direction of the Tonhalle Orchestra in Zurich , and from 1950 to 1974 he was also director of the Zurich Mixed Choir (Zurich Mixed Choir ). He gave up the direction of the Tonhalle Orchestra in 1956 and then led the Beromünster Radio Orchestra until 1970. In addition, from 1963 to 1973 he taught conducting at the Music Academy of the City of Basel . Numerous conductors have taken him to England, Israel, Hungary, Germany, Denmark and other countries. In 1990 the City of Zurich awarded him the Hans Georg Nägeli Medal.
