Günther Mittergradnegger

Günther Mittergradnegger (born January 28, 1923 in Klagenfurt ; † February 25, 1992 there ) was a choirmaster and composer.

Mittergradnegger was a full-time teacher and founded the Madrigal Choir Klagenfurt in October 1948, made up of young Carinthian teachers, including students from what was then the teacher training institute in Klagenfurt, and directed it until 1974. The choir's repertoire spans literature from Gregorian chant to contemporary music, but above all the maintenance of the folk song and the Carinthian song in particular. Mittergradnegger soon established the choir as one of the most famous ensembles in the Carinthian and Austrian choral landscape and also undertook numerous trips abroad (1951 Italy, 1953 Wales, 1964 Finland, 1972 Soviet Union). The choir won numerous prizes in competitions - in 1954 in Arezzo (1st prize); 1966 in Middlesbrough, England (1st prize, mixed choir, 1st prize: mixed chamber choir, 2nd prize: women's choir); 1974 great culture award of the state of Carinthia The Madrigal Choir has been authorized to use the Carinthian coat of arms since 1989 .

Together with the dialect poet Gerhard Glawischnig , Mittergradnegger created numerous Carinthian dialect songs as a composer and stood out as one of the most important representatives of the New Carinthian song. In addition, he also composed masses and set high German choral songs to music. From 1975 he was the editor in charge of the Carinthian cultural magazine Die Brücke .

Günther Mittergradnegger was buried in the Annabichl Central Cemetery in Klagenfurt.
