The Basel Music Academy is a four institutes Academy of Music , which since 2008 the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland belongs. It is located in the suburbs of the city of Basel .

At the beginning of the MAB, the General Music School was founded on February 8, 1867 on the initiative of the Basel orphan father Johann Jakob Schäublin-Vögtlin and the Society for the Good and the Charitable Basel .

The first director was Selmar Bagge from 1868 to 1896, then the composer Hans Huber was artistic director of the Allgemeine Musikschule from 1896 to 1918, and Heinrich Zickendraht was in charge of the administration . Hans Huber also founded the University of Music as a conservatory in 1905 , the first of its kind in German-speaking Switzerland.

In 1954, the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, founded by Paul Sacher in 1933, was merged with the General Music School and the University of Music. All three institutes together have since formed the Music Academy of the City of Basel. In 2001 the basic musical courses were introduced as the fourth institute. The City of Basel Music Academy has been part of the Northwestern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences since 2008 .

Master classes

  • Karlheinz Stockhausen taught the master class for composition in 1963.
    Ferruccio Busoni , Italian pianist and composer, gave a master class and several piano recitals at the Basel Conservatory from 1910.
  • Egon Petri , pianist and a student of Busoni, led a master class in 1908 and taught piano at the conservatory in 1920/21.
  • Wanda Landowska , a pioneer of the harpsichord from Poland, gave a master class and recitals with music from the 18th century at the Conservatory in 1919.
  • Paul Baumgartner , pianist, taught at the Basel Conservatory from 1937 and led the piano master class there for decades.
  • Sandor Vegh , violinist, taught the violin master class at the Conservatory from 1953 to 1964.
  • Pierre Boulez , composer and conductor, led masterclasses for composition from 1960 to 1963 and gave interpretation and conducting courses at the Basel Music Academy.
  • Karlheinz Stockhausen , composer, taught the master class for composition at the Music Academy in the summer semester of 1963.
  • Henri Pousseur , composer from Belgium, taught the master class for composition at the Music Academy in 1963/64.
  • Mstislaw Rostropowitsch , Russian cellist, gave a master class at the Basel Conservatory in August / September 1977.
  • As the leader of the LaSalle Quartet, Walter Levin gave master classes at the Music Academy and conducted chamber music courses at the Basel University of Music.
  • Rudolf Buchbinder , Austrian pianist, led a master class for piano at the Basel University of Music from 1976 to 2010.
  • Krystian Zimerman , pianist, taught a master class for piano at the Basel University of Music from 1996-2004.
  • Heinrich Schiff , Austrian cellist, taught a master class for violoncello at the Conservatory of the Basel Music Academy from 1979 to 1990.

  • Johann Jakob Schäublin, the Basel teacher and orphan father, made a significant contribution to founding the General Music School in 1867 with his educational ideas.
  • Selmar Bagge , the cellist, composer and music critic, previously active in Vienna and Leipzig, became the first director of the Allgemeine Musikschule in 1868.
  • Hans Huber , Swiss composer and pianist, headed the music school from 1896 and built up the conservatory as a vocational school.
  • Hermann Suter , composer and conductor, headed the music school and conservatory from 1918 to 1921 and taught the composition class.
  • Walter Müller von Kulm , composer and music teacher, headed the music school and conservatory from 1947 to 1964, from 1954 in dual direction with Paul Sacher.
  • Paul Sacher founded the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in 1933 and was director of the music academy from 1954 to 1969.
  • Willy Rehberg , pianist and music teacher, was director of the music school and conservatory from 1921 to 1926, where he taught piano and chamber music.
  • Felix Weingartner , conductor, brought the institute international splendor during his time as director from 1927 to 1935 with conducting courses.
  • Klaus Linder , pianist and music teacher, taught piano, headed the conservatory from 1964 and was director of the music academy from 1969 to 1974.
  • Thüring Bräm , composer and conductor, was director of the music school from 1973 to 1987, conducted several ensembles and the conservatory orchestra.
  • Rudolf Kelterborn , composer, took over the management of the Basel Music Academy from 1983 to 1994 and taught composition.
  • Regula Rapp , musicologist, directed the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis from 2005 to 2012.
  • Pedro Memelsdorff, flautist and musicologist, headed the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis from 2013 to 2015.
  • Stephan Schmidt , guitarist, was rector of the University of Music from 2002–2012; since then he has been director of the Basel Music Academy.
