Larry Grenadier

Larry Grenadier (born February 6, 1966 in San Francisco ) is an American jazz bassist.

Live and act

From the age of eleven, Grenadier played bass (bass guitar, later double bass) and studied English literature at Stanford University (graduating in 1989), but had also been active as a jazz musician since college in San Francisco. In 1990 he moved from San Francisco to Boston and was a member of Gary Burton's band for about a year , with whom he also toured Europe.

He then moved to New York City , where he was a member of Brad Mehldau's trio (with drummer Jorge Rossy ) from 1995 . He was also a member of the trio of Pat Metheny from 1997 with drummer Bill Stewart (with whom he first played in 1996 in Japan, album Trio 99/00 ). He also performs with İlhan Erşahin and with the Trio Fly . The debut album was released in 2004 by Savoy , which also includes drummer Jeff Ballard and tenor saxophonist Mark Turner . He formed another trio with Matija Dedić and Jeff Ballard ( From the Beginning , 2010).

Grenadier also played a. a. with Joshua Redman (album Timeless Tales ), whom he still knew from his time in Boston, with Joe Henderson (in the mid-1980s in San Francisco and on a European tour in the 1990s), Larry Goldings (in a trio with Paul Motian , Awareness 1996), Charles Lloyd (on his album The Water is Wide 2000), John Scofield (on worldwide tour 1997 with Bill Stewart and Seamus Blake ), Kurt Rosenwinkel , Steve Cardenas , Torsten de Winkel , Don Braden , Betty Carter , Danilo Pérez , Tom Harrell , Stefano Bollani ( Sheik Yer Zappa ) and Wolfgang Muthspiel .

Grenadier has been married to singer-songwriter Rebecca Martin since 1997, and he has also appeared on her solo albums. The couple have one son and live in the Hudson Valley, north of New York City.
