Fly (jazz band)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fly is an American jazz band consisting of Mark Turner (saxophones), Larry Grenadier (double bass) and Jeff Ballard (drums).

The musicians formed the piano-less trio after having previously worked together in Chick Corea's band project Originations ; Ballard and Grenadier had played together as teenagers in California. In 2003, Savoy Records produced their debut album Fly , which was released the following year. In January 2008, the trio recorded the second album Sky & Country in New York , which was released by ECM . In 2010 the trio, which sees itself as a “democratic collective”, in which each member contributes pieces to the repertoire and no one acts as a band leader, appeared at Jazz Baltica and the Newport Jazz Festival . The album Year of the Snake followed in 2012 . In terms of style, the trio Allmusic is based on recordings by John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter on the Blue Note label.
