JazzBaltica

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

JazzBaltica is a jazz festival in Schleswig-Holstein that has been taking place since 1991. It was founded with the aim of promoting cultural cooperation between the countries bordering the Baltic Sea by bringing together musicians and especially young talents in changing line-ups. Until 2011 this was the central event location Gut Salzau in the Plön district . Since 2012 the festival has been a guest on the grounds of the Evers shipyard in Timmendorfer Strand - Niendorf . From 2018 JazzBaltica will take place in the new spa gardens of Timmendorfer Strand.

history

In 1991, the Schleswig-Holstein State Music Council, in cooperation with the Schleswig-Holstein State Ministry for Education, Science, Youth and Culture, organized the first JazzBaltica under the heading “Ars Baltica Prolog 1991”. The initiative for JazzBaltica came from the then Prime Minister of Schleswig-Holstein, Björn Engholm , an enthusiastic jazz lover, with the aim of promoting cultural cooperation between the countries bordering the Baltic Sea.

The venue for the first two years was Kiel , where the festival began - a concert for poetry , prose and drums with Günter Grass and Günter “Baby” Sommer .

Until 1999, the artistic and organizational management of JazzBaltica was in the hands of Rainer Haarmann (Ministry of Culture SH), Nis-Edwin List-Petersen , Arvid Maltzahn (State Music Councilor SH) and Christian Stöhrmann (TSBW Husum). The festival has been part of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival since 2002 . Until 2011, the artistic director of the festival was Rainer Haarmann.

In 2011, the central events were relocated to the Landeskulturzentrum Salzau, where the festival took place every summer until 2011. The JazzBaltica concept includes initiating one-off projects, bringing musicians together - even in changing line-ups - and promoting young talent.

A special feature of the festival is that JazzBaltica takes place every year under changing musical direction with changing musicians from the German, Scandinavian and Baltic regions. The directors included jazz musicians and composers such as David Murray , Vince Mendoza , Django Bates , Maria Schneider , Bengt-Arne Wallin , Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen & Ole Kock Hansen , Tim Hagans , Conrad Herwig , Lars Danielsson , Wolfgang Haffner , Steven Bernstein and Johannes Enders .

In addition to musicians who regularly appear at the festival, there is also a platform for lesser-known artists. This ranges from artists from the Schleswig-Holstein scene to talented young musicians from Scandinavia and the Baltic states.

From 2005 to 2012 JazzBaltica was given a special motto:

  • 2005: "on drums"
  • 2006: "on piano"
  • 2007: "on trumpet"
  • 2008: "on sax"
  • 2009: "big band battle"
  • 2010: "twenty years with friends"
  • 2011: “piano, piano” remembering esbjörn
  • 2012: "new places, familiar faces"

With the announcement by the Schleswig-Holstein state government to cancel the subsidies for the festival from 2011, as well as the declaration of intent to sell the Salzau mansion, JazzBaltica was carried out for the last time in 2011 with a shortened program at the Salzau location under the artistic direction of Rainer Haarmann, who left office with the 2011 JazzBaltica.

From 2012 JazzBaltica found a new venue on the grounds of the Evers shipyard in Timmendorfer Strand / Niendorf under the artistic direction of Nils Landgren , who owes his international career to JazzBaltica.

JazzBaltica has been taking place in the New Kurpark of Timmendorfer Strand for the first time since 2018 .

The television recordings of the JazzBaltica concerts, originally made by ZDF / 3sat , are now broadcast by NDR , DLF and arte . Selected concerts can also be seen on arte Live Web .
