Maria Lynn Schneider (born November 27, 1960 in Windom , Minnesota ) is an American composer , band leader and arranger . She is considered "one of the most original composers and arrangers of the contemporary big band - jazz ."

Live and act

Schneider received piano lessons at the age of five; her teacher for the next 13 years was Evelyn Butler, a classical and jazz pianist from Chicago. In the school band she played the clarinet and violin. After studying music at the University of Minnesota (BA 1983), the University of Miami and the Eastman School of Music (MA 1985), Schneider came to New York City in 1985 . From 1986 to 1991 she studied composition here with Rayburn Wright, and after his death in 1990 with Bob Brookmeyer . He introduced them to Mel Lewis , who performed some of their compositions with his orchestra. At the same time, she was assistant to the arranger Gil Evans and worked with him on numerous projects, in particular the music for the film The Color of Money ( The Color of Money ) and the music for the Gil Evans / Sting -Tournee 1987th

Maria Schneider founded her own big band , the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra , in 1992 and performed every Monday at the Visiones jazz club in New York from 1993 to 1998 . She has written commissioned works for the following orchestras, among others: Norrbotten Big Band , Danish Radio Orchestra , Metropole Orchestra , Orchester National de Jazz and Carnegie Hall Jazz Orchestra. In Germany she worked with the big band "Blechschaden", the WDR Big Band Cologne , the Sunday Night Orchestra , the SWR Big Band and the NDR Big Band .

In their formations worked u. a Jeff Ballard , Dave Ballou , George Flynn , Greg Gisbert , Tim Horner , Ingrid Jensen , Rick Margitza , Rich Perry , Tim Ries , Scott Robinson and Ryan Truesdell .

Since 2003 she has been working mainly with the New York crowdfunding platform and their jazz music label ArtistShare and has won several Grammy Awards during this cooperation with productions made there.

The name of her 2015 album The Thompson Fields refers to a farm she grew up with in southwest Minnesota. All eight compositions are own and refer to the landscape there.

Prizes and awards

Schneider received the Gil Evans Fellowship in 1991 . She was named "Arranger of the Year" in the Critics' Down Beat Poll in 1997, 2001 and 2002. In 2001 she also received the "Readers' Poll Award" for arrangers of the magazine, as she did in 2004 and more often afterwards, for example in 2011 in the Reader and Critic Polls as arranger and composer. After having been nominated twice for a Grammy , she received her first Grammy in 2005 for her album Concert in the Garden (the first Grammy for a CD that is only sold on the Internet). In 2007 she received a second Grammy for her composition Cerulean Skies . She received the Doris Duke Award for her composition Dissolution , which was created in collaboration with the Pilobolus Dance Group .

The 2013 album Winter Morning Walks , recorded with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, won three Grammy Awards at once: for a) Best Classical Vocal Solo, b) Best Classical Contemporary Composition and c) Best Engineered Album, Classical. In 2016 she received the Grammy Award in the Large Jazz Ensemble Album category for her album The Thompson Fields .

In 2020 Schneider was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
