Windom is a small town (with the status " City ") and the administrative center of the Cottonwood County in the mid-southwest of the US -amerikanischen state of Minnesota . In 2010 , Windom had 4646 inhabitants.

Windom is on the high plateau of the Coteau des Prairies , which extends over parts of South Dakota , Iowa and Minnesota. The city lies on both sides of the upper Des Moines River , a right tributary of the Mississippi . Windom is at 43 ° 52'06 "north latitude and 95 ° 07'07" west longitude. It extends over 11.21 km², which is spread over 10.77 km² of land and 0.44 km² of water.

Neighboring towns to Windom are Jeffers (17 miles north), Bingham Lake (7.9 km northeast), Lakefield (15 miles south), and Wilder (9.5 km southwest).

In north-south direction, US Highway 71 runs through the city as the main road. There it meets Minnesota State Routes 60 and 62 . All other roads within North Mankato are subordinate roads or inner-city connecting roads.

The Windom Municipal Airport is located on the northern outskirts of Windom. The nearest major airport is Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (229 km northeast).

W. Windom

The place Windom was created in 1871 by the railway engineer AL Beach on a route of the then Sioux City and St. Paul Railroad . The place was named after William Windom (1827-1891), a U_S Senator and two-time Treasury Secretary of the United States.

In the same year a post office was set up. A hardware store, a saloon, two bakeries, a grocery store, a meat market, a printing shop, a hotel and a general store were also built. In 1875 the place was incorporated as the "Village of Windom".

In 1974, Windom, like all incorporated communities in Minnesota, was given City status.
