With a population of 120,762 (as of 2016), Fargo is the largest city in the US state of North Dakota and the seat of the county seat of Cass County . It is located in the southeast of the state on the Minnesota border . The city owes its name to the entrepreneur William Fargo .

The city has a total area of 98.3 km 2 and is located on the Red River of the North . Across the river is the Minnesota town of Moorhead . Both cities form the core of the Fargo – Moorhead Metropolitan Area .
Other neighboring towns of Fargo are Horace (on the southwest city limit), West Fargo (on the western city limit), Harwood (10 miles northwest), Georgetown , Minnesota (15 miles north), and Oakport , Minnesota (on the northeast City limits).
The closest major cities are Winnipeg in the Canadian province of Manitoba (359 km north), Duluth in Minnesota on Lake Superior (390 km east), Minneapolis , Minnesota (378 km southeast), Sioux Falls in South Dakota (394 km south) and North Dakota's capital Bismarck (315 km to the west).
The Canadian border is 150 miles north.

In Fargo is a junction of several railway lines of the BNSF Railway . About the track runs and the Empire Builder from Amtrak , the Chicago to Seattle and Portland connects.
North Dakota's largest airport, Hector International Airport, is located in the north of the city .

The Duke Ellington Orchestra made a guest appearance on November 7, 1940 at the Crystal Ballroom in Fargo. The recordings of the concert first appeared in 1978 as Duke Ellington at Fargo, and in 1940 live in a club edition.
The city was Buddy Holly's last destination , which he never reached due to a plane crash on February 3, 1959 ( The Day the Music Died ).
