However, he had to wait two years for another use in the NHL, during which he continued to play for the Americans. In his NHL rookie - 2005/06 season he scored nine goals and 15 assists and played in all 18 playoff games the Sabers in which he contributed another four assists.

In the 2006/07 season , Paul Gaustad, whom his teammates only call The Goose , played either with Chris Drury and Aleš Kotalík in the second row or as the center of the fourth row. In early February he suffered injuries in a collision with Dany Heatley , which were ultimately diagnosed as a torn ligament, so that the 2006/07 season ended prematurely for him. In the summer of 2008, Gaustad extended his contract with the Sabers for four more years.

Since his contract expired after the 2011/12 season and the Sabers no longer planned with the striker, they transferred him on February 27, 2012 together with a four-round suffrage in the NHL Entry Draft 2013 in exchange for a first-round suffrage in the NHL Entry Draft 2012 to the Nashville Predators . Gaustad played there after a contract extension until the summer of 2016, before he officially ended his career at the age of 34 on September 8, 2016.
