Burnaby is a city in the southwest of the Canadian province of British Columbia . It is located east of Vancouver and is the administrative seat of the Metro Vancouver district .
geography
The urban area of Burnaby covers an area of 90.61 km² and is located in the geographic center of Metro Vancouver and the Burrard Peninsula . Burnaby borders Vancouver to the west, Port Moody , Coquitlam and New Westminster to the east, the Burrard Inlet to the north and the Fraser River to the south . The terrain is characterized by hills, valleys, lakes and an alluvial plain. The highest point is the 370 m high peak of Burnaby Mountain .
history
Before it was settled by European immigrants around 1850, the Burnaby area was largely untouched forest landscape. Until the opening of the Canadian Pacific Railway's transcontinental railroad in 1887, only a few farms and sawmills were built. The boom began in 1891 when the Vancouver to New Westminster tram opened . That year the land along the route was parceled out and sold. On September 24, 1892, the official establishment of the Burnaby community took place, named after Robert Burnaby, who in 1859 together with Walter Moberly searched for coal in what would later become Burrard Inlet.
The official establishment, in the form of the award of local self-government , for the municipality took place on September 24, 1892 ( incorporated as the Municipal District ). On 17 February 1992, matching the centenary, the status of the municipality then changed in a city ( City ) and Burnaby received the town charter .
Demographics
The 2016 census showed a population of 232,755 inhabitants for the settlement, after the 2011 census for the municipality still showed a population of 223,218 inhabitants. Compared to the last census in 2011, the population increased by 4.3% and developed more slowly than the provincial average, there with a population increase of 5.6%. In the census period from 2006 to 2011, the number of inhabitants in the municipality increased by 10.1%, which is well above average, while the provincial average increased by 7.0%.
At the 2016 census, the average age of the residents was 41.1 years, well above the provincial average of 42.3 years. The median age of the residents was determined to be 40.3 years.
