Ballard Power Systems Inc. is a Canadian manufacturer of fuel cells based in Burnaby near Vancouver , British Columbia .
history
Ballard Research Inc. was founded by Geoffrey Ballard in 1979 and renamed to its current name some time later. Ballard has been developing fuel cell technology since 1983. In 1993 the first bus powered by fuel cells based on hydrogen technology was presented. In 2001 the first product was offered on the market.
In addition to fuel cell stacks, the core components, other subsystems for energy conversion have been developed. In 2005 the systems business was taken over by DaimlerChrysler and Ford as part of a joint venture . The NuCellSys GmbH in Nabern (formerly Ballard Power Systems AG ) was given the task of developing fuel cell drives for series production. However, the integration of the fuel cell drive into the vehicle is made difficult by numerous technical boundary conditions. In 2009 Daimler AG took over Ford Motor Company's 50% stake in NuCellSys GmbH. NuCellSys GmbH is 100% a subsidiary of Daimler AG.
The company concentrated on the further development of fuel cells and electric drives for fuel cell vehicles. 2002, the company got a contract to supply the drives for 30 fuel cell buses from Mercedes-Benz that the project CUTE (Clean Urban Transport for Europe) / ECTOS (Ecological City Transport System) in Amsterdam , Barcelona , London , Luxembourg , Madrid , Reykjavík , Stockholm , Stuttgart and Hamburg were tested in practice from 2003 to 2006. Three more vehicles each were used in Beijing and Perth . Since the start of the project in 2003, these Mercedes-Benz Citaro BZ buses have carried over 4 million passengers .
After the end of the CUTE program, the fuel cell buses will only run in Hamburg (nine vehicles, since the former buses for Stuttgart and Stockholm were relocated here), Amsterdam and London in 2007. The Hamburger Hochbahn has proven its CUTE fuel cell buses in the summer of 2010 out of service and has entered into a new project, the "German SauberBus" 2011th
In 2013 and 2015, Ballard signed an agreement with Volkswagen AG on the sale of patents.
In 2018 Ballard concluded a strategic partnership with the Chinese company Weichai Power. Weichai acquired a 19.9 percent stake in Ballard for $ 163 million. As part of this partnership, Weichai and Ballard want to serve the Chinese market with fuel cells for buses, trucks and forklifts.
Projects since 2018
Ballard supplies fuel cells for buses from the Belgian manufacturer Van Hool and the Polish manufacturer Solaris , among others , and use in trains from the Mireo series from Siemens is also planned from 2021. At the end of 2019 Ballard received an order for fuel cells for use in large dump trucks from the Anglo American mining company . Ballard Power Systems Europe, based in Hobro ( Denmark ), develops and produces fuel cells for use in ships.
Ballard works with Audi to develop fuel cells for cars. The development partnership is contractually agreed until at least 2022.
In addition to drives for vehicles, fuel cell systems are manufactured for installation in 19-inch standard housings, which are considered an alternative to conventional technologies such as batteries or generators , with the aim of realizing uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and emergency power units . In January 2020 Ballard announced that it would supply systems for the emergency power supply of cellular base stations in Germany in cooperation with the companies AdKor and SFC Energy . In a first tranche, Ballard is supplying 500 fuel cell stacks. A system for cellular base stations has been installed in Norway since 2019, ensuring an off-grid power supply for up to 72 hours. In addition, fuel cell systems for drones are being tested, which, compared to pure battery operation, should allow significantly longer operating times with little dependence on the outside temperature.
