SFC Energy is a listed manufacturer of direct methanol and hydrogen fuel cells based in Brunnthal near Munich. The company also develops solutions for off-grid and stationary power generation and distribution. This also includes the production of voltage converters and switched-mode power supplies . The fuel cells are produced at the headquarters in Brunnthal. Further production sites are located in Almelo in the Netherlands (PBF Group, development & production of power electronics), in Romania (PBF Power) and in Canada (Simark Controls division).

history

The company Gigantus Vermögensverwaltung was founded in 2000 and converted into Smart Fuel Cell GmbH (SFC) in 2002. In 2006 the company was transferred to a stock corporation. The change from the open market to the Prime Standard of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in May 2007 was combined with a capital increase and brought about EUR 57 million in proceeds from the issue.

In 2010 the name was changed to SFC Energy. In November 2010, Holland Private Equity (HPE) took over shares from company founder Manfred Stefener and PRICAP Venture Partners amounting to around 25 percent and thus became a major shareholder of the company.

In the fourth quarter of 2011 the company acquired the Dutch PBF Group, which in turn had emerged from Philips in 1999 . With the acquisition of this specialist for power electronics and switched-mode power supplies by SFC, two companies were connected that had approximately the same company size. Two years later, the investment had to be written down due to a development below plan.

For more than a decade after SFC went public in 2006, the company's balance sheets were losing money. The EUR 57 million issue proceeds were thus completely used up. A significant profit was then achieved in 2018. Sales rose from 32.4 million euros in 2013 to 54.3 million euros in 2017 and 61.7 million euros in 2018, with the number of employees rising from 186 in 2012 to 221 in 2013 and 258 in 2017 to 279 at the end of 2018 .

Business activity

SFC products provide off-grid power supply for industrial, government and private users. According to its own information, the company had sold over 41,000 fuel cells (January 2016: 34,000; January 2017: 35,000) for the areas of leisure, industry and defense & security by January 2019. The fuel cell systems from SFC Energy are direct methanol fuel cells (Direct Methanol Fuel Cell DMFC). The DMFC product lines include both small, portable devices (e.g. in the Defense & Security area) and stronger, transportable units, e.g. B. as a case device or trailer system. Another field of activity is electronic components such as voltage converters and switched-mode power supplies for industry, which SFC develops, produces and sells internationally. The products are increasingly being supplied as a system solution for power supply. In addition to the DMFC product line, fuel cells that run on hydrogen instead of methanol have been offered since 2019. The power range of H2 fuel cells is currently in the power range from 2.5 to 20 kW (EFOY JUPITER 2.5 hydrogen fuel cell).

In January 2020 it was announced that SFC Energy will supply emergency power supply systems for mobile radio stations in Germany in cooperation with the Canadian company Ballard Power Systems and the German company AdKor.

Since April 2006 the company was listed on the open market. The largest shareholder is HPE PRO Institutional Fund with around 25%, around 48% of the shares are in free float. The shares have been listed in the ÖkoDAX since June 2012 .
