The SMA Solar Technology AG (originally "for S ystem-, M ess- and A nlagentechnik"), headquartered in the North Hessian Niestetal is one of the world's most liquid and Germany's best-known manufacturer of inverters for photovoltaic systems with power supply, mains-independent power supply and backup operations.

The company has branches in a total of 18 countries. Like SMA Railway Technology GmbH, which was sold in March 2017, SMA Solar Technology AG emerged from the former SMA Technologie AG.

In 2019, 3,124 people were employed. The turnover in 2019 was 915.1 million euros.

history

SMA was founded in 1981 by Werner Kleinkauf and the former board members Günther Cramer (1952–2015), Peter Drews and Reiner Wettlaufer under the name SMA Regelsysteme GmbH as an independent company from the University of Kassel and renamed SMA Technologie AG in 2004 . In 2006, Pierre-Pascal Urbon expanded the board. In June 2008 the name was changed to the current one in order to underline the strong focus on solar technology and to do justice to the company's internationalization. At the same time, the railway technology division was spun off into SMA Railway Technology GmbH. On March 29, 2017, the sale of SMA Railway Technology GmbH to the Chinese railway technology group Bejing Dinghan was completed.

Major changes in the Management Board took effect after the Annual General Meeting on June 10, 2009. The founder Reiner Wettlaufer switched to the supervisory board. Roland Grebe joined the company as Chief Technology Officer and Marko Werner for Marketing & Sales, both of whom have been with the company for over twenty years. From April 2010, Jürgen Dolle in the Human Resources department and Uwe Hertel in the Operations department added to the Executive Board. Since the 2011 Annual General Meeting, Pierre-Pascal Urbon has been spokesman for the board and responsible for the company's strategic direction and the continuation of internationalization. The two founders Drews and Cramer switched to the supervisory board. Uwe Hertel left the board in 2011.

In November 2012, Lydia Sommer expanded the board of directors and took over the finance and legal department from Pierre-Pascal Urbon, who previously held this department in a double role as board spokesman and chief financial officer. Since May 2013, Lydia Sommer has also been responsible for Human Resources and the role of Labor Director after Jürgen Dolle left the Board of Management. Management board spokesman Pierre-Pascal Urbon took over the operative business. In January 2015, Martin Kinne took over the sales and service department.

SMA is involved in deENet, an association “Competence Network for Decentralized Energy Technologies North Hesse ”, which was founded at the beginning of 2003 , which aims to bundle the competencies available in this area in the region. In March 2009, SMA built Solar-Werk 1, a CO 2 -neutral production facility.

In 2011 the company had more than 5000 employees. 2014 saw the biggest slump in the company's history to date. On January 26, 2015 it was announced that 1,600 of the Group's almost 4,700 jobs were to be cut, 1,300 of them in Germany. The location in the north Hessian Niestetal should be largely affected by these 1,300 job cuts. While SMA achieved sales of 1.9 billion euros and a surplus of 365 million euros in 2010, sales in 2014 were just 805.4 million euros, with a loss of 164.9 million euros.

As part of the company's transformation in 2015, the SMA Supervisory Board reduced the number of Management Board members. Lydia Sommer therefore resigned from the SMA Management Board at the end of February and Martin Kinne at the end of December 2015. Their duties have been transferred to the three remaining board members. As of January 1, 2016, Pierre-Pascal Urbon, as spokesman for the board, was responsible for the strategy department as chief financial officer (CFO) for finance, legal affairs and compliance as well as sales. Roland Grebe, previously Board Member for Technical Innovations, headed the HR and IT departments and was the new Labor Director at SMA Solar Technology AG. Jürgen Reinert had overall responsibility for the technology and operations departments.

Roland Grebe left the Board of Management on December 31, 2016. Ulrich Hadding was newly appointed to the board. With effect from January 1, 2017, the Management Board of SMA Solar Technology AG consists of the following members: Ulrich Hadding (Chief Financial Officer, Human Resources and Legal), Jürgen Reinert (Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer), Pierre-Pascal Urbon ( Board Spokesman, Board Member for Strategy, Sales and Service).

Pierre-Pascal Urbon left the company at his own request on December 31, 2018 and resigned from the Management Board on October 15, 2018 in consultation with the Supervisory Board. Jürgen Reinert has been CEO of SMA Solar Technology AG since October 15, 2018 and is responsible for strategy, sales and service in addition to Operations and Technology. Ulrich Hadding will continue to be responsible for the areas of finance, human resources and law as well as investor relations.
