In 1848 the company was founded by Johann Christian Wacker as a blacksmith's workshop under the name Wacker in Dresden and began industrial production in 1875. In 1930 the engineers developed high-frequency technology for internal vibrators . At the same time, the first electrically operated rammer was developed and produced as an innovation for concrete and soil compaction. Even before the Second World War , the company expanded its production program and began building a domestic and foreign sales and trading organization. This development was interrupted by the total loss of the production facility in Dresden shortly before the end of the Second World War.

In 1945 business activity was resumed in Kulmbach and the company's headquarters were relocated to Munich in 1951. The first foreign company was founded in Hartford (Wisconsin) (USA) in 1957 ; In 1986 it was relocated to Milwaukee , where a production facility and logistics center are now located. The company subsequently expanded its international presence and is now represented worldwide with over 50 subsidiaries, over 140 sales and service stations and over 12,000 sales and service partners.

The corporate group was restructured from a GmbH to Wacker Construction Equipment AG . Until 2005, Wacker only developed, produced and sold small construction equipment up to around three tons in the fields of concrete technology, soil and asphalt compaction, demolition technology, and supply technology. With the acquisition of Weidemann GmbH in 2005, the company entered compact construction machines and the agricultural sector. In 2006 Drillfix AG (Switzerland) and Ground Heaters, Inc. (USA) were acquired.

The company went public on May 15, 2007 and is listed in the Prime Standard of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. In autumn 2007 the company was included in the SDAX.

On October 31, 2007, the merger with Neuson Kramer Baumaschinen AG ( Linz , Austria), a manufacturer of compact construction machines, including compact excavators, wheel loaders, dump trucks and skid steer loaders, was completed. The Neuson Kramer Baumaschinen AG itself was in 2001 by the merger Neuson Construction GmbH with the traditional company Kramer-Werke GmbH emerged. Neuson was founded in 1981 under the name Neuson Hydraulik GmbH with headquarters in Linz and initially developed hydraulic mini excavators. In 1990 Neuson Baumaschinen GmbH was founded . In 1998 the dump truck manufacturer Lifton Ltd. (GB) bought and added skid steer loaders to the product range in 2004.

In February 2009, Wacker Construction Equipment AG was renamed and transformed into today's Wacker Neuson SE .

Between 2011 and 2017, Wacker Neuson produced mini excavators for Caterpillar at its plant in Hörsching . The Austrian subsidiary received the Austria's Leading Companies award in 2015 .
