history

The company was founded in 1890 in Wetzlar by Arthur Pfeiffer. In 1908 he invented the oil air pump . By 1926 Pfeiffer had become the leading company in vacuum technology. In 1958 the turbomolecular pump (turbo pump ) was invented , its share of the group turnover today is over 40%, here the company is the world market leader. In 1969 the until then family-run company became part of the Liechtenstein Balzers Group . In 1974 the company moved from Wetzlar to neighboring Aßlar .

In 1991 Pfeiffer became independent again and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in July 1996 . This made the company the first German medium-sized company to take this direct step. It was only two years later, in April 1998, that Pfeiffer Vacuum went public on the German stock exchange in Frankfurt am Main, in the Neuer Markt segment (today TecDAX ). On October 4, 2007, the listing on the NYSE was terminated due to the low trading volume on the NYSE with an average of 3.6% of the global trading volume.

In January 2010, “Pfeiffer Vacuum” took over the vacuum component manufacturer “Trinos Vacuum Systems” based in Göttingen . At the end of 2010, Pfeiffer Vacuum completed the acquisition of the vacuum technology division of the Alcatel-Lucent group “adixen”.

On September 30, 2015, it became known that the Busch Group , a family-run competitor, had acquired a good 15% of the shares in Pfeiffer Vacuum through an investment company. However, both companies emphasized that they wanted to maintain their independence. Nevertheless, by October 2015, Busch increased its share beyond the blocking minority to 27%. The stake was later expanded to almost 30%, and in January 2017 the first public takeover offer was made, which was rejected. In April 2017, Busch passed the 30% mark and submitted an improved offer, which Pfeiffer Vacuum also rejected. After the takeover period expired, Busch held over 35% of Pfeiffer shares (as of the end of June 2017). Busch SE has held the absolute majority of the shares with 50.02% since the beginning of November 2018.
