history

In 1569 Anthoni Fournier founded a workshop for the production of Leonese goods in Nuremberg. In 1621 Fournier's sons opened further workshops south of Nuremberg for the production of Leonese goods. This resulted in the companies Johann Balthasar Stieber & Sohn, Nuremberg, Johann Philipp Stieber, Roth and the United Leonische Fabriken, Nuremberg.

Share of 1000 RM in Leonische Drahtwerke AG from June 1932

In 1917 they merged these companies and founded Leonische Werke Roth-Nürnberg AG. In 1931 the name was changed to Leonische Drahtwerke AG, based in Nuremberg. In 1930 the production of rubber-insulated cables began. Until 1931, the business year began on April 1st. Since then on January 1st. In 1999, the company was renamed LEONI AG and became an umbrella company and was split into three companies: LEONI Draht GmbH & Co. KG , LEONI Kabel GmbH & Co. KG and LEONI Bordnetz-Systeme GmbH & Co. KG . Leoni AG has been listed in the MDAX since 2002 and switched to the SDAX on September 24, 2018 .

In 2006 Leoni took over Kerpen GmbH & Co. KG and Studer Cables AG ( Däniken , Switzerland). In May 2007, Leoni bought 80% of the shares in the silicone specialist Silitherm ( Monticelli d'Ongina , Italy). In 2012, Leoni posted sales of 3.809 billion euros (2011: 3.701; 2010: 2.956) and an operating profit of 235.8 million euros (2011: 237.14; 2010: 130.72). Consolidated net income was 156.02 million euros (2011: 155.96; 2010: 67.25).

At the end of 2013, Leoni had 61,591 employees (2012: 59,393); In 2013 it generated sales of 3.917 billion euros. The consolidated net profit in 2013 was 105.9 million euros.

At the end of 2014, Leoni had 67,988 employees; 2014 generated sales of 4.1 billion euros. Consolidated net income in 2014 was 115.1 million euros. The pre-tax profit grew by 12 percent to 182.5 million euros. On July 29, 2016, the Supervisory Board signed an agreement with Frank Hiller, member of the Management Board responsible for the Wiring Systems Division, on his mutual departure from the Management Board at the end of 2016.

On August 16, 2016, Leoni announced that she had become the victim of CEO fraud , the damage is said to have amounted to around 40 million euros.

On March 14, 2018, it was announced that Aldo Kamper , CEO of Osram Opto Semiconductors , would become CEO by October 1, 2018 at the latest. Kamper took over this position on September 1, 2018.

After a profit warning, with which the annual targets for 2019 published in February 2019 were canceled, CFO Karl Gadesmann left the company on March 17, 2019.

Due to the dramatically deteriorating situation, LEONI commissioned a renovation report in accordance with IDW Standard S 6 in December 2019. A promissory note in the amount of around 170 million euros that expired in March 2020 would have led to bankruptcy. The report confirmed a positive continuation prognosis. Based on the expert opinion, the banks allowed a syndicated loan to be used to repay the promissory note and thus avert the liquidity crisis. Due to the economic crisis in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic , the situation deteriorated noticeably. In April 2020, LEONI therefore guaranteed the federal states of Bavaria, Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia for an emergency loan of 330 million euros.
