The company was founded on June 18, 1953 as "Hamborner Bergbau Aktiengesellschaft" with its headquarters in Duisburg. The company's articles of association were: “Coal mining and the processing of its products, including the refinement and conversion of coal and valuable coal materials, as well as the sale of these products; conducting related business of all kinds. ”In 1969 the company brought its mining activities into what was then Ruhrkohle AG and subsequently acted as asset manager for the Thyssen family , the main shareholder at the time.

From 2007, the company pursued its focus on a REIT stock corporation and parted with all activities that were incompatible with REIT status and incompatible with its REIT strategy. From then on, the company focused exclusively on managing its property portfolio.

The company has a nationwide real estate portfolio consisting of 79 properties in 60 locations with a total value of over 1.5 billion euros. The focus of the portfolio is on retail properties and specialist market centers, office and medical centers as well as commercial buildings in central inner-city locations in major German cities and medium-sized centers.

The company has been a real estate investment trust (REIT) since 2010 and benefits from corporate and trade tax exemption.

The largest shareholder is the RAG-Stiftung , which holds 12.45% of the shares. Belfius , BNP Paribas and BlackRock each own around 5% .
