history
The Blue Bonnet Barn Dance began in Temple, Texas in November 1953 with the formation of KCEN. According to other sources, the show was held in Waco , Texas. The show was directed by Harry Stone, who had previously worked on WSM's Grand Ole Opry and KSTP's Sunset Valley Barn Dance . The Barn Dance was moderated and led by Clyde Chesser and his band, the Texas Village Boys.
The show was broadcast by KCEN-TV on Channel 6 from half past seven on Saturday evenings. Each issue was watched on screen by around 140,000 people and was so popular by 1955 that you had to order tickets for the show four weeks in advance if you wanted to be in the audience live.
Today the Blue Bonnet Barn Dance is no longer on the air - it was discontinued in the late 1950s. Clyde Chesser moved to KOKE in Austin , Texas in the early 1960s , where he hosted the CC Jubilee . Over the years, the music and entertainment business changed and the broadcasters changed their programming. KCEN-TV is now a news channel and is broadcast nationally on NBC.
