geography

location

Aßlar is located on the valley of the Dill ( Lower Dill Valley ), which flows into the Lahn in neighboring Wetzlar , at the junction of the Oberwesterwald ( Westerwald , in the west) with Krofdorf-Königsberger Forst and Hörre ( Gladenbacher Bergland ).

A geographical center of the Lahn-Dill district , calculated using the “intersection determination” method, is located southwest of Berghausen , a district. The different methods for calculating geographical center points are described in the calculation of the center of Germany .

geology

The core city and the district of Werdorf lie in the valley floor of the Dill valley, a Mulde valley. The other parts of the city are either in the Lemptal (Oberlemp, Bermoll) or on the elevations of the Lahn-Dill-Bergland (Berghausen, Bechlingen).

Neighboring communities

Aßlar borders in the north on the communities Mittenaar and Hohenahr , in the southeast on the city of Wetzlar , in the south on the city of Solms and in the west on the community Ehringshausen (all in the Lahn-Dill district ).

First mention

Aßlar was first mentioned in a deed of donation in the Lorsch Codex in 782/783 . There it is described as "in Aslare marca", in the Mark Aßlar, which is "in pago Logenehe", in the Lahngau .

Like many other places, Aßlar developed from a few large farms, located on the streams, through industrialization before the First World War to a size of around 5,000 inhabitants, always forming a community with the district of Klein-Altenstädten on the other side of the Dill bank. Klein-Altenstädten tried again and again to become independent, but could never break away from the much larger Asslar.

post war period

With the admission of around 1,500 displaced persons after the Second World War and the incorporation of the communities of Bechlingen, Berghausen , Bermoll and Oberlemp on December 31, 1971, the population of the community of Asslar grew considerably. In the course of the regional reform in Hesse , Werdorf was incorporated on January 1, 1977 by a state law, and Aßlar reached its current size of around 4400 hectares with around 13,700 inhabitants. The city charter for Asslar was finally awarded on November 16, 1978.

robber

The robber Johann Justus Dietz , known as Lumpen-Jost, came from Asslar and was executed in Gießen on March 24, 1813.
