Hazelnut in the coat of arms of Asslar

The hazelnut is a common figure in heraldry and can appear in different numbers in the coat of arms or in the field .

In the number one, this seed is often held by the heraldic animal squirrel or the nut is shown with leaves and stalk in the shield . Two fruits or three in a cross shape is the most popular shape. Four heraldic figures are arranged as a hazelnut cross . The coloring can be naturalistic or abstract with the permitted colors or metals of heraldry. Gold or silver is paramount. The arrangement of three hazelnuts in the 2: 1 style, but also in a three-pass arrangement, is popular .

The hazelnut offers many prerequisites for a speaking coat of arms . Family names or place names with hazel, hassel etc. are suitable for including the hazelnut in the coat of arms. The term nut also makes a talking coat of arms. Example the Swiss municipality of Nusshof .
