history
The settlement of the community can be proven on the basis of finds back to Celtic times. The first documented mentions go back to the 13th century. At an early stage, ores such as silver, nickel, copper and iron as well as slate and diabase were dug in various places . As a result, processing plants such as smelting works and hammer mills emerged. Only recently has it been possible to uncover the foundations of a medieval forest smithy in the Wissenbach district during archaeological excavations , which is part of the Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus National Geopark as a geotope .
In the district of Hirzenhain, the teacher Emil Schäfer founded a gliding club in 1923 and built an airfield. First experiments with self-built aircraft failed. As early as 1928, the aviation pioneer Max Kegel managed to fly for over an hour. The first public flight competition took place in 1932. The flight operations had to be stopped in 1945, but in 1951 it was resumed with the first German glider pilot's meeting. In 1962 the Hirzenhain airfield was moved to its current location.
Territorial reform
In the course of the regional reform in Hesse , the community was founded on October 1, 1971 through the voluntary merger of the communities Eibelshausen, Eiershausen and Wissenbach. The 589 meter high Eschenburg mountain , seven kilometers northeast of Dillenburg, gave the new community its name. Force state law were the communities Eschenburg Hirzenhain and Simmersbach and Roth of the former district Biedenkopf to advanced large village Eschenburg together . The entry into force took place on July 1, 1974 by the district president in Darmstadt. Local districts with local advisory boards and local councilors were established for all six districts .
Eibelshausen is the largest village in the municipality. It performs the central function in the middle Dietzhölztal, is the administrative seat and school location of the secondary and secondary school with a grammar school branch for ten villages in the communities of Eschenburg and Dietzhölztal .
