geography

Altenfeld is the southernmost place in the Ilm district. The village extends in the valley basin of the Oelze in a west-east direction. From a geological point of view, this region already belongs to the Thuringian Slate Mountains , but this merges into the Thuringian Forest northwest of the village , although the two mountains cannot be separated exactly.

Altenfeld is 550 to 650  m above sea level. NHN and is in the north by the Haube ( 810.8  m above sea level ), in the west by Kohlhieb ( 790  m above sea level ), in the east by the Hohen Wald ( 693.6  m above sea level ) and in the south by the 743 Meter high decem cut limited. Neustadt am Rennsteig is to the northwest of the village , and the city of Großbreitenbach is to the northeast . The flow passage of Oelze following which leads to the southeast resin Talstrasse to 150 meters lower lying district Oelze the municipality Katzhütte. To the south and west are extensive spruce forests and the Rennsteig . The municipality is almost completely forested (83%). The predominant tree species is the spruce . Only in the basin around the village are some meadows that are used for grazing cattle. Altenfeld has a rough low mountain range with cool, damp summers and snowy winters.

geology

In 1988, scientists from the Freiberg Mining Academy identified the oldest traces of life (vegetable plankton ) in the Altenfeld layers of the Thuringian Slate Mountains in dark gray to black silica slate in the area of the former GDR. Geologically, the silica schist belongs to the Precambrian and consists mainly of the material quartz . It owes its dark color to the relatively high content of carbon .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1492. The document speaks of cutting mills on "Clemenstein" and "on the old field", the exact location of which is unknown. References from 1490 to a deserted village on the upper Oelze, called "old field", suggest that Altenfeld started on an old desert and must therefore be much older than documented.

In April 1525 the peasant uprising broke out in Thuringia, as a result of which the settlers of the forest villages are said to have come together to form a so-called "Evangelical Brother League", also known as the Forest League. In the course of the conflict, the troops of the coroners also occupied the "old field". In 1550 a smelter was built in the area of the present day town at the confluence of the Reischelbach and Oelze rivers , in which the silver and copper ore mined in the area was melted. From around 1600 to 1646 Altenfeld was a desert . In 1646 the settlement of a glassworks "on the old field" , an abandoned miners' settlement, led to the resettlement of the place. This glassworks developed into what was soon to be the largest village in what was then the Gehren office in the sovereignty of the principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen .

Glass production, along with brick- making , box- making and hollow-hewning, has remained the town's most important industry to this day. Merchants from Thuringia brought the glass to Holland, and Dutch merchants also came here from around 1690.

Between 1738 and 1741, the church, which is now a listed building, was built on a protruding rock.

Due to the location in the mountains without sufficient arable land, there were repeated famines in Altenfeld, the last time in 1772 when 72 people died of starvation. In 1846 a fire devastated the village, which completely destroyed 17 houses.

In the late 19th century there was only one glassworks left; It was not until 1900 that new smelters were founded.

In 1901 a glassmakers' association and in 1905 a local branch of the SPD were founded. In 1911 Wilhelm Pieck spoke to Altenfeld's workers at an election meeting. In 1919 the Altenfeld workers 'and soldiers' council took part in the dismissal of the Gehrener district administrator, in 1920 Altenfeld glassmakers took part in the general strike against the Kapp Putsch .

In 1954, Altenfeld was awarded the "State Recognized Resort" for the first time, and in 1998 the Thuringian Ministry of Economics and Infrastructure gave the municipality this title on a permanent basis.

In the center of the village was the Holländischer Reiter building complex, which dates back to 1872, with restaurants and hotels. The name goes back to a 5-day carousing party of Dutch carters, a rider is also shown in the local coat of arms. During the GDR era, the FDGB rest home "House of the People" existed here. After a long period of vacancy, the buildings were demolished in 2016.

In 1994 Altenfeld joined the Ilm district and the Großbreitenbach administrative association . The administrative seat was in the city of Großbreitenbach. On January 1, 2019, the administrative community was converted into the rural municipality of Großbreitenbach.

Territorial Affiliation

Since 1599 Altenfeld belonged to the county and later principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen , which in 1918 became part of the Free State of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen . From 1922 the place belonged to the district of Arnstadt , from the southern part of which the district of Ilmenau was formed in 1952 , to which Altenfeld then belonged. In 1994 the Ilm district was created , to which Altenfeld belongs today.

Economy and Transport

In Altenfeld, as in other places in the area, home work was widespread in the past. Manufactured products were mainly household goods such as B. Matches, spoons and other wooden products. These homeworkers were among the poorest people in Thuringia, just as the slate mountains were long considered the poorest region in the country. In addition to working from home, the glass industry was an important line of business in the area, and it existed here until the GDR era. In addition to ordinary household hollow glass, products were also thermometers and other glass measuring devices.

Today, the largest employer in the area is Remy & Geiser GmbH , based in Anhausen , which is active in the production of plastic and glass packaging for the pharmaceutical industry and has been operating a plant here since 1991 by taking over the Altenfeld site of Glasring Thüringen AG .

The state road L2648 runs through Altenfeld, via which there are connections to Kahlert am Rennsteig (from there to Neustadt am Rennsteig , Masserberg or Gießübel ) and Großbreitenbach. From this a municipal road branches off to Katzhütte / Oelze . The next rail connection is also five kilometers east in Katzhütte on the Schwarzatalbahn . About two kilometers east of the village is the Oelzetalbrücke on the Nuremberg – Erfurt high-speed line , which is otherwise routed through tunnels in the municipality.

Bus connections are provided by the IOV Omnibusverkehr GmbH Ilmenau on lines 304 (Großbreitenbach – Ilmenau) and 308 (Altenfeld – Herschdorf – Königsee) .
