Local elections in Thuringia 2014

The municipal elections in Thuringia 2014 took place on May 25, 2014 together with the European elections in Germany 2014 . The district councils of the Thuringian districts, the city councils of the independent cities as well as the city and local councils of the municipalities belonging to the district were newly elected. According to the decision of the Thuringian Constitutional Court of April 11, 2008, there was no five percent hurdle .

Scope and number of candidates

The district councils of the 17 Thuringian districts, the city councils of the six independent cities as well as city and community councils in 838 district cities and municipalities were elected. A full-time mayor was elected in five municipalities and an honorary mayor in fourteen. There was also a choice of 837 local and district mayors .

4,600 applicants ran for the 1,032 seats in the 17 district assemblies and city councils of the six independent cities. Around 17,000 applicants ran for the 8,300 seats in the city councils of the 838 municipalities belonging to the district.

voter turnout

The turnout in the district council and city council elections of the independent cities was 51.4% and thus below the turnout of 2009 (53.2%). It was highest in the Saale-Holzland district with 58.3%.

The town and municipal council elections of the towns and municipalities belonging to the district had a turnout of 51.5%, the European elections taking place at the same time in Thuringia had a turnout of 51.6%.

District assemblies and city councils of independent cities

The nationwide results listed below are only intended to provide an overview and are purely a mathematical figure. These results have no influence on the composition of the parliaments, but they do provide a meaningful picture of the nationwide changes in voter behavior compared to the 2009 local elections.

  • CDU : 35.0%, 358 seats, +1.7% p compared to 2009, 15 seats more than 2009.
    • The CDU was able to gain slightly and became the strongest party in Weimar, Eisenach and all districts with the exception of the Ilm district. In the urban districts, however, it was only between 22 and 25% (Eisenach: 30%), in the rural districts between 31 and 44% (Eichsfeld: 58%).
  • The Left : 21.9%, 229 seats, +1.2% p compared to 2009, 7 seats more than 2009.
    • The left was also able to improve slightly and became the strongest force in Gera, Jena, Suhl and the Ilm district. She achieved her best result in Suhl (33%), the worst in Eichsfeld (10%).
  • SPD : 18.3%, 181 seats, -2.0% p compared to 2009, 20 seats less than 2009.
    • The SPD suffered slight losses; it remained the strongest force only in Erfurt (29%). Overall, their results were very different from district to district, ranging from 9% (Gera, Eichsfeld) to 30% (Kyffhäuserkreis).
  • Greens : 5.0%, 50 seats, +0.5% p compared to 2009, 4 seats more than 2009.
    • The Greens competed everywhere except in Suhl and in the Saale-Orla district and were able to improve slightly. They still achieved their best results in the university cities of Weimar (16%), Jena (11%) and Erfurt (10%). In the rural districts, it ranged from 2.5% in the Hildburghausen district to 5.8% in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district.
  • FDP : 3.4%, 33 seats, -4.0% p compared to 2009, 45 seats less than 2009.
    • The FDP suffered the greatest losses, but did even better than in the last Bundestag and European elections. Their results ranged from 1.8% in the Wartburg district to 5.6% in the Nordhausen district.
  • all others together: 16.4%, 171 seats, + 2.6% p compared to 2009, 75 seats more than 2009.
    • The free electoral associations asserted themselves as the fourth force, but performed very differently from region to region, with both large gains and losses. The electoral associations were particularly strong in Suhl (23%) and Gera (22%) as well as in some districts with voting shares of over 15%. Nationwide, Free Voters received 5.4% of the vote, with the Federal Association of Free Voters receiving 2.8% of the vote.
    • The NPD (32 seats) competed in significantly more circles than in 2009 and was able to increase its share of the vote slightly. Strongholds were once again Eisenach (7.4%) and the Wartburg district (5.9%), where the NPD has been significantly more active for several years than in other parts of the country, where the results are between 2.5% (Erfurt) and 6.0 % (Kyffhäuserkreis) were. The NPD did not run in two cities and five districts. Nationwide, the party received 3.0 percent of the vote.
    • The pirates (8 seats) competed in all cities except Suhl and in the districts of Gotha and Weimarer Land. The results of their first participation in local elections ranged from 1.3% (Weimarer Land) to 4.6% (Jena). Nationwide, the party received 0.8 percent of the vote
    • The AfD (4 seats) only competed in Erfurt (4.5%) and in Weimarer Land (4.6%) and received significantly lower results than in the parallel European elections. Nationwide, the party received 0.4 percent of the vote.
    • Other small parties and groups that were able to move into parliaments were the list for alternative democracy (1.7% in the Wartburg district ), the Eisenacher Aufbruch associated with the MLPD (3.7% in Eisenach ), and the future alliance close to the NPD Hildburghausen (3.4% in the Hildburghausen district ), the ÖDP (2.9% in Eichsfeld), the community of voters Die Guten (1.8% in Jena ) and the Thuringian People's Interest Association (1.4% in the Kyffhäuserkreis ).

City and local councils

Nationwide results - These results do not affect the composition of parliaments. They only serve as an overview and are a purely arithmetical variable.

  • CDU: 28.6%, 2183 seats, -4.7% p compared to 2009.
  • Left: 13.9%, 576 seats, -1.3% p compared to 2009.
  • SPD: 12.6%, 560 seats, -7.7% p compared to 2009.
  • FDP: 2.4%, 161 seats, -2.3% p compared to 2009.
  • Greens: 2.7%, 52 seats, + 0.5% p compared to 2009.
  • all others together: 39.7%, 5005 seats, + 2.7% p compared to 2009.
