As a district mayor in parts of Germany and Austria are the leaders of some parts of municipalities designated.

Thuringia

In Thuringia, the mayor of a district is the head of a district of a municipality for which a district constitution exists. According to § 45 of the Thuringian municipal code , the local mayor is the chairman of the local council, i.e. the elected committee for the locality and honorary officer of the fulfilling community for the duration of the term of office. The mayor of the district has the right to take part in an advisory capacity at all meetings of the municipal council and committees relating to the district and to submit appropriate applications. The terms of office usually run parallel to those of the fulfilling municipality. The comparable official title in other federal states is mayor or mayor. Until the amendment of the Thuringian municipal regulations in 2008, the corresponding designations were local mayor and local council in Thuringia as well .

Outside Thuringia

The term local mayor is also occasionally used in other German federal states, for example in Detmold , without this being regulated in the corresponding municipal regulations.

Mayor of the district in Austria

In the course of the municipal structural reform in Styria, which provided for numerous amalgamations of municipalities at the beginning of 2015, the function of district mayor was introduced for parts of the municipality that had been dissolved. In the other federal states, the town councilor performs a similar function .
