geography

Gießübel is located in the Thuringian Forest directly on Rennsteig at a height of 500- 680  m in the valley of Neubrunnenplatz and its two inflows Rehbach and Dachsbach.

history

Gießübel was first mentioned in a document around 1317 and probably goes back to an early cast iron works. The place was part of the Eisfeld district and was historically shaped by forestry and wood processing. In the 17th century, pebbles were also mined. Other areas of acquisition were linen weaving, the yeast trade and two grinding mills. In 1666 175 inhabitants were counted, in 1852 there were already 787. Industrialization mainly affected the local wood processing, as the mills became sawmills with attached wood products. In 1636 Gießübel set up its own school, which started eight other schools in the area. In 1900 the "New School" was built and completed. After 1918 a glassworks was also operated.

Before the Second World War , tourism was initially only weak. At GDR times of the tourism has expanded. The local culture house (opened in 1956) was the first culture house in the Upper Forest. With the number of vacationers well above the average, a large part of the population earned a little extra income. Furthermore, there were Büttner , Wagner , wood turner , wheel cutter , charcoal burner , blacksmith , locksmith, nail smith , joiner, carpenter and mining in Gießübel. The wood processing and glass production was continued and an electrical company was opened. There were also brewing and catering trades, as well as butchers and bakers.

On March 25, 1994 Gießübel merged with three surrounding communities to form the new community Schleusegrund.
