( Steindachner , 1882)

The blood tetra ( Hyphessobrycon eques , syn .: H. callistus , H. serpae ), also incorrectly called Serpa tetra, is one in the Amazon basin , lower Río Paraguay , Rio Guaporé , upper Río Paraná and tributaries of the Río Uruguay in southern Brazil , Bolivia , Paraguay and Argentina native species of tetra. In French Guiana , the fish was introduced by humans.

features

The blood tetra owes its name to the reddish basic color of its body. His body is elongated, moderately high back and strongly flattened on the sides. Females are higher back. The blood tetra becomes four centimeters long. In addition to the reddish basic color, the species has a teardrop-shaped, black shoulder spot that can fade in older animals. The dorsal fin is red at the base, otherwise black with a white upper edge, the anal fin is red with a wide, black edge. The first rays of their fin are white. The remaining fins are red.

The premaxillary has two rows of teeth, the inner one consists of five three- or four-pointed teeth. On the short maxillary , two to three three-pronged teeth are very close together.

Way of life

Hyphessobrycon eques prefers to inhabit unshaded, lake-like waters and streams of extensive, swampy floodplains. It lives there in the bank zone near lush vegetation, often in the edge zone, where the water surface is largely free of plants. In the event of danger, it immediately takes refuge in the dense vegetation.

Measurements of pH values at various sites showed acidic to slightly alkaline reactions (5.5–7.6), values for the carbonate hardness below the detection limit up to values of around 7 ° dH and conductivity values between 10 and 240 µS / cm.

Blood tetra have a large temperature tolerance. While temperature measurements of tropical waters mostly showed values between 24 and 30 ° C, a water temperature of only 6.3 ° C was measured at a site in Argentina in winter (the southern hemisphere).

Aquaristics

Keeping and care

Normally, the care of the blood tetra in the community tank is not a problem, even if compared to other species of the genus Hyphessobrycon it is not always peaceful and occasionally shows distinct, intraspecific aggression. Weaker conspecifics can be eaten, eyes lost as a result of fights. The reason can be inadequate nutrition or the result of overstocking, since blood tetra are social group animals, but at the same time need a minimum distance to other species.

origin

Most of the animals in the aquarium trade come from German offspring or imports from Asia.

Legal regulation in Austria

In Austria, the minimum requirements for keeping fish are defined in Regulation 486 in Section 7 and its Annex 5. See also the Wikipedia entry ornamental fish .

Especially for blood tetra, the following also applies: at least 5 animals of this species must be kept and the following limit values must be observed:

value annotation
Minimum size of the aquarium 60 × 30 × 30 Length × width × height in [cm]
Area for the water temperature 18-29 Degrees Celsius [° C]
Area for the water hardness 0-15 Degree of German total hardness [⁰dGH]
PH range 5.0 - 8.0 Acidity
Maximum value of nitrate 50 [mg / l]
