The 2549 km long Río Paraguay flowing in South America is the most important tributary of the Río Paraná . In its upper reaches it is called in Portuguese Rio Paraguai , in its lower reaches in Spanish Río Paraguay . The name in Guaraní is Ysyry Paraguái . The name means "water that goes to the water", derived from the language of the indigenous people, Guaraní: pará ("ocean"), gua ("to / from") and y ("water").

River course

The Río Paraguay rises in Brazil in the mountainous highlands of Mato Grosso about 115 km north of Cuiabá . From there, the Paraguay River flows south. He leaves the highlands and crosses the lowlands of the Pantanal . There it mostly flows parallel to the Bolivian border. In the south of the Pantanal it forms the border between Brazil and Paraguay. It then crosses Paraguay in a north-south direction and crosses the Paraguayan capital Asunción . There it also unites with its largest tributary, the Río Pilcomayo . Immediately afterwards it forms the border between Paraguay and Argentina . It flows into the Paraná a little north of Corrientes .
