Cáceres , officially Município de Cáceres , is a city in the southwest of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso . It is located on the left bank of the Río Paraguay , about 100 km (as the crow flies) from the border with Bolivia and the local border town of San Matías (Santa Cruz) . The capital Cuiabá of the state of Mato Grosso is about 400 km to the east. The Pantanal , one of the largest inland wetlands on earth, is located in the vicinity of Cáceres. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage .
The Brazilian federal highway BR-070 connects Cáceres with Cuiabá and San Matías (Santa Cruz) in Bolivia. The city also has a river port and an airport ( IATA code CCX).
The city was founded in 1778.
Cáceres is the seat of the diocese of São Luíz de Cáceres . The Universidade do Estado de Mato Grosso (UNEMAT) also has its headquarters and a campus here .
