Com ( Kon , Kun ) is a village and Suco on the north coast of the East Timorese administrative office Lautém ( Lautém municipality ), near the Ponta Camatara .

Surname

The place name is derived from the Fataluku word kon (u) or kounu , which means "night" or "dark place" depending on the source. In 1936 Com was renamed Nova Nazaré by the Portuguese . But the name did not catch on and a few years after the Second World War , the old name was reverted to.

The place

The village of Com

The village is located 20 kilometers east of the village of Lautém . Com is at 46  m above sea level , on one of the largest plains in the country, the Plain of Com . The Indonesian island of Kisar , 50 kilometers away, is visible from Com in good weather. The place Com forms a settlement center with several directly neighboring villages. Here are Lohomato ( Lomatu ), Mata , Muafono ( Muafoso ) and Sabandar .

Com is the eastern end point of the well-developed northern coastal road, which leads via Baucau and the state capital Dili (203 km) to the border with Indonesia at Batugade and is one of the most important traffic routes in the country. Another, smaller overland road leads south to the municipal capital of Lospalos, about 20 kilometers away . Com has a helipad, anchorage, medical post and elementary school.

history

Timor around 1700 with the empire Com at the eastern tip

Near Com are Telupunu caves, which have been used as accommodation for 2000 years, most recently by the freedom fighters of the FALINTIL in the 1980s.

Com used to be one of the traditional kingdoms of Timor, ruled by a Liurai . It is unclear whether it was a vassal of Sarau to the west . In Com, people deny that their neighbors, who appear regularly in historical Portuguese documents together with Faturó , ever had to pay tribute. Com doesn't appear on a list of Afonso de Castro , a former governor of Portuguese Timor who listed 47 empires in 1868.

After East Timor's declaration of independence in 1975, Indonesia began a large-scale invasion of the neighboring country. Until October 1976, the place Lautém and the connecting road to Lospalos were under Indonesian control, but it was not until 1977 that East Timor was also occupied in the area. In the same year, the residents of Com surrendered to the Indonesian Battalion 512. They were immediately interned on the beach for a week and then deported to Parlameno, where they were merged with other interned civilians from across the Lautém district .

politics

The village of Com

In the 2004/2005 elections , Rafael da Conceição was elected Chefe de Suco. In the 2009 elections won Calisto Bernadino Vilela .

economy

There is a beach resort in Com. There are some coral reefs off the coast where tourists can go diving. The Suco is part of the Nino Konis Santana National Park .

There are currently plans for an international marketplace in Com in order to be able to trade with the Indonesian Kisar.

Culture

A woman is weaving a tais

In Com, cotton yarn spun by itself is combined with purchased yarn for Tais . The roots of the noni tree , the leaves of the Charunu plant from the genus Indigofera and mud are used to dye the cotton . Three classic types are traditionally used in Com, although the motifs are different for men and women: The Tais Sica Lau (also Sikalao ) are worn in traditional ceremonies. Dark brown and black dominate the Tais for the men (Tais Sica Lau Mane) , red for the women (Tais Sica Lau Feto) . Tais Upulakuaru are the tais traditionally worn for ceremonies in the region around Com, for example for weddings. They stand out because of their more colorful motifs. Tais Sapulau wear unmarried men and women. At weddings the groom has to bring 77 buffalo as dowry, the bride 10–15 ikat-tais (tais sisirana) .

Twice a year the Mechi takes place at the Fataluku in Com , the collecting of the Meci worms ( Eunice viridis ). The smaller Mechi kiik takes place in the last quarter of the moon in February and the large Mechi boat at the new moon in March . In August a sardine fishing festival is celebrated, the Api moko lere .
