The Umun Ira , ( Portuguese Lagoa Umunira even Numunira 2 is) a salt lake in East Timor Suco Com (Office of Administration loud , community loud ), to the east of the country. The lake has an area of 0.716 ha.
Surname
"Umun" is the Fataluku word for "to die" or "death". According to legend, the ancestors made a promise at this lake. If someone breaks the rules, he will be killed by the holy power ( lulik ) of the lake. Roughly one could translate the lake name with "lake of death" or "lake of dying".
Geography and fauna
The Umun Ira is the largest of the three lakes of Ran , an area north of the village of Com, about 100 meters from the coast of the Strait of Wetar and 50 meters from the Strait of Lautém to Com . The Utchan Ira and the Lua Ira are further south. Even outside of the rainy season, the lakes do not dry out.
The region is part of the Nino Konis Santana National Park . The lakes are considered to be particularly worthy of protection due to the numerous water birds that live here in tree-covered savannas, on the beach and in salty mud flats. The area of the lakes is claimed by the Fataluku Clan ( Ratu ) Kati. Slash-and-burn agriculture, illegal logging and hunting threaten the biotope.
