The Wetar Strait is a strait in the Malay Archipelago . It separates the island of Wetar in the north from the island of Timor in the south. To the west is the island of Atauro , behind it the Strait of Ombai . In the northwest lies the Banda Sea . To the east, beyond the island of Kisar , lies the Timor Sea . At its narrowest point, the road is 36 km wide.
Just five kilometers from the north coast of Timor, the seabed drops to a depth of 1,000 m. During the Cold War , American nuclear submarines were therefore able to pass undetected on the streets of Ombai and Wetar.
