Strait of Ombai

The Strait of Ombai (also Strait of Malua ) is a strait in the Lesser Sunda Islands . It separates the island of Alor (formerly Ombai ) in the northwest from the islands of Timor in the south and Atauro and Wetar in the east. To the north lies the Banda Sea , to the west the Sawu Sea . On the north coast of East Timor , the Wetar Strait branches off to the east .

Just five kilometers from the north coast of Timor, the seabed drops to a depth of 1,000 m. During the Cold War , American nuclear submarines were therefore able to pass undetected on the streets of Ombai and Wetar .
